marble surround fireplace

The surround for your fireplace is the component that will be applied surrounding the fireplace before you install the mantelpiece on the top.  There are four major parts to the facing of a fireplace; the parts are the header sitting on top of the fireplace, the riser at the base of the fireplace, the legs on either side of the fireplace and the hearth sitting on the floor directly in front of the fireplace.

The more popular trends for materials include:

Brick is one of the more common materials that are found in fireplace surrounds from years ago.  However, the brick has since gone by the wayside and been replaced by marble, granite and slate.  These materials prove to be much more desirable in fireplace surrounds for today’s day and age.

Granite is formed deep within the Earth at temperatures beyond measure, but it is one of the hardest and most resilient forms of stone composed of crystallized minerals.  Whereas, marble will only turn into stone after millions of years have gone by and it is much softer than and not as resistant as its counterpart.  The marble family includes limestone, onyx and travertine that start off as the sediments of animals or minerals underneath water.

A lot of people who are looking into different interior design options are making the decision to switch to marble or some other form of stone around your fireplace.  Stone offers a lot of versatility in design choices and allows you to incorporate the look and style that you want in your new surround.  There are a lot of different colors and textures that you can choose from for your new stone surround, so it will compliment almost any interior design that you choose to incorporate into your home.  Stone is fairly easy to maintain and it is nonflammable, so you will never have to worry about having it around your fireplace.
